Scientists often don’t have experience in reviewing plans for their space, so they don’t always know what to look for on the drawings. NHGRI developed the following list of items to help its scientists know what to look for and what questions to ask.

Cooling
  • Location of air cool units in relation to furniture
  • Cooling for electronics in conference rooms
  • Cooling adequate for copiers
  • Cooling adequate for other equipment
Doors
  • Door glass for inner doors
  • Door glass for outer doors; fireproof rating
  • Door closures, yes or no
  • Door size for equipment clearance
Electronics
  • LAN connections in relation to furniture
  • Conference room connections
  • Types and locations of electronics’ connections in conference room
  • Electrical and LAN for Airports in ceiling
  • Videoconferencing capabilities; analog and ISDN lines
Equipment
  • Equipment placement
