Building 7 Renovation & Conversion at Rocky Mountain Laboratories

Building 7 at the Rocky Mountain Laboratories (RML) in Hamilton, Montana was an unused, industrial boiler plant located on the northwest corner of the RML “Quad,” which is part of the RML Historic District. The Quad consists of seven buildings situated around a central courtyard that share common corridors and facilities. The interior space of Building 7 is an open, 2-story area with a partial second floor open to the floor below.
This project converted the building into Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) laboratories needed by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) research program. The building was completely renovated and brought into compliance with life safety and seismic codes, and was the first NIH building to achieve “gold” status by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program.

The completed building now contains 7,468 gross square feet (GSF) of lab, lab support, lab office, mechanical, electrical, and building support space. The partial second floor was extended with structural steel columns and a concrete deck to create a closed-in second floor, and a 2-story addition was built between buildings 7 and 6.
