Building 7 at Rocky Mountain Laboratories

This project at the Rocky Mountain Laboratories (RML) in Hamilton, Montana will convert an unused boiler plant to biosafety level 2 (BSL-2) laboratories needed by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) research program.  The project will completely renovate the building and bring it into compliance with life safety and seismic codes.

Building 7 is a defunct, industrial boiler building located on the northwest corner of the RML “Quad” that is part of the RML Historic District.  The Quad consists of seven buildings situated around a central courtyard that share common corridors and facilities.  The interior space of Building 7 is an open, 2-story area with a partial second floor open to the floor below.

The work included in this project will convert 3,975 gross square feet of existing industrial space to lab, lab support, lab office and building support space, extend the partial second floor of Building 7 with structural steel columns and concrete deck to create a complete, closed in second floor to add 1,513 gross square feet of lab and lab support space and build a new, 2-story addition between Building 7 and Building 6 to provide 1,980 gross square feet of space for mechanical/electrical and laboratory space.  When complete the building will provide 7,468 gross square feet for BSL-2 laboratory and building support space.

Schedule/Status:  Design has been completed.
Construction activity is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of fiscal year 2010 and is expected to be completed in fiscal year 2011.
